THE DOME LIDDED BIN AND ITS PROBLEMS

Unfortunately thousands of Wirral’s residents suffer having one of these dome lid Wheelie Bin’s and endure the common Problem of maggots they often come with, including many of our customers too, they are not our favourite to clean!

The design of this bin lid holds a design fault, it should seal the bin when closed. Keeping bad odours IN and everyday pests OUT. Unfortunately with this bin design there is a huge gap underneath the handles either side, this may keep the rain out but that is about it. (see picture below)

This gap makes it really easy for pests to get in, lay their eggs and then leave resulting in many many people suffering infestations from things like maggots and ants during the summer months.

OUR ADVICE…

Having dealt with these dome lid wheelie bin’s for many years now and knowing how common they are, we have come up with some easy to do tips. Unfortunately there is no way to completely stop pests getting in but you can make it less attractive for them and hope they move on. Common Dome Lid Wheelie Bin Problem Maggots

1. BAG YOUR WASTE

Bagging and tying off your waste is always going to help reduce odours and pests, sealing in the waste allowing nothing in and nothing out.

(Please note. If you have any raw food left overs that need to be binned such as chicken, we strongly urge you to double or even triple bag this waste before placing in your wheelie bin)

2. KEEP YOUR BIN AS COOL AS POSSIBLE

One thing we have learnt from cleaning bins over the past 20 odd years is how incredibly hot they get inside especially when left in the summer sun. Hot bin’s create nasty smells and those odours attract flies from far and wide!

Find a shaded area to store your bin. Your green bin is more prone to pests such as maggots so keeping this bin cool is essential in avoiding them. A garage or shed is your best option but failing that, search for an area that is shaded during the hottest time of the day and leave it there. Under a tree or up against a wall.
Places like Argos and B&Q do sell outdoor Wheelie Bin cupboards but they can be expensive.

3. CLEAN OUT YOUR BIN REGULARLY

We urge all bin owners to do this regularly. Bins do actually hold a lot of bacteria and germs and some can be harmful to our health. Decaying food and dangerous bacteria lives inside your bin.

We hope this helps and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
