Wirral is getting new food waste bins. For us as bin cleaners, it’s not totally new, but we will need to adjust since 95% of our customers are starting to use them.
Many councils across the country, including Cheshire West, have used these food waste bins for years. While we don’t cover much across the border, we do serve areas like Willaston, Neston, and Park Gate, which have food waste bins.
Some customers ask us to clean them, while others don’t. Even though food waste is separated in these bins, we can honestly say it doesn’t change how dirty the general waste bins get, as they still hold waste for two weeks between collections.
Customers will receive 2 bins. The smaller caddy is meant for your kitchen. It comes with a year’s supply of food waste liners. When the caddy is full, tie off the liner and move it to the larger food bin outside. The larger bin has a locked lid to stop animals like foxes from getting in. It’s best to keep these larger bins in a shaded area if possible.
We can’t clean every customer’s food bin right away, and we’re not sure how many will join in—some say they have no food waste, while others don’t want to participate. It’s a good idea for us to find out who is interested.
